Housing Information

All housing units, cabins and classrooms on the Whittington Center are designated non-smoking areas.  BBQ grills are also prohibited inside any of these buildings as well as on the porches of the housing units. Handicapped accommodations are available in the Founders Retreat cabins.

Your pets are welcome to visit the Whittington Center but are not allowed inside any of the housing units or cabins.  Pets must be under control during their visit to the Whittington Center and we ask that dogs be on a leash for their safety as well as that of other guests.

All RV and Primitive campsites are assigned at the time your reservations are made and must not be changed without prior approval of the front gate.  This is to avoid conflict with other reservations.  Primitive campsites are limited to tents and small pop-up tent trailers only.

Reservations for any of the accommodations on the Whittington Center are accepted by phone only when credit cards are used.  Reservations are accepted based on availability at the time the reservation is made.  Refunds on deposits will be granted when cancellation notice is received by the Whittington Center 48 hours prior to the date of the reservation.

Individuals using any accommodations must check in at the front gate where room and space assignments will be made.  Check in time is no earlier than 2 PM and check out time is no later than 10 AM. You must check in and out on the dates you have specified. If you have not checked out prior to 10 AM you will be charged an additional fee.

When checking out please bring your room keys, sheets and pillowcases to the front gate. There is a $10.00 fee for any and all lost keys.

Discover the Whittington Center

The Whittington Center is a rapidly growing destination recreation site.  Not only is it a world class shooting facility, it offers a variety of recreational activities.

Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, its natural beauty and wealth of history make the Whittington Center an exciting vacation spot.  Easily accessible from I-25, the Whittington Center is located 10 miles south of Raton on Highway 64.

The Whittington Center encompasses 33,300 acres ranging from 6,300 to 8,100 feet in elevation.  Breathtaking views, outstanding climate, hospitality and an array of family activities such as hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing, and camping make the Whittington Center a place everyone can enjoy.

There is a broad range of housing to accommodate individuals, couples, and small to large groups.  Lodging options include modern housing, rustic cabins, back country cabins, campgrounds with RV hookups and primitive camping.  Other facilities include a cafeteria, gift shop, bathhouse, training center and a variety of world class shooting ranges.

BACK COUNTRY CABINS

Access to the back country cabins requires 4WD vehicles.  The back country cabins are furnished with tables, chairs, beds, wood stoves, firewood, first aid kits, lanterns, cooking grill, and 10 gallons of water.  No electricity or running water is available.

“Elk Cabin” overlooks Corral Canyon and has a clear view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains from Taos to the Spanish Peaks of Walsenburg.  The cabin accommodates four people with a set of bunk beds and a double bed.

“Deer Cabin” is situated high above the New Mexico plain, with a panoramic view of the mountains, mesas and old volcanoes.  The cabin has a bunk bed, a double bed and a sleeping loft, and will accommodate six to eight people comfortably.

Visitors need to bring food, eating and cooking utensils, bedding, towels, charcoal briquettes, clothing and personal items.

MODERN HOUSING

The competitor-housing complex includes three dormitory style buildings.  Each building has a central lobby with three separate wings.  Each wing contains five bedrooms, each with two single beds, a kitchenette and two separate bathrooms with showers for men and women.  Bring your own towels and toiletries.

FOUNDERS RETREAT

The Brownell, Wood, Carter, and Leupold Cabins are the first of six in the Founders Retreat complex.  These cabins overlook a beautiful meadow with an abundance of birds and wildlife.  Each cabin has a common kitchen and living room area.  The bedding is provided, but you must bring your own cooking and eating utensils, towels and toiletries. 

“Brownell Cabin” was the first in the complex.  It has four bedrooms, each with two single beds, a men’s and women’s bathroom with shower.  This cabin is fully handicapped accessible with spacious rooms and bathroom amenities.

“Wood”, "Carter”, and “Leupold” cabins have four bedrooms, each with two single beds and a private bathroom.   One bedroom is designated as handicapped accessible in each 1,800 sq. ft. cabin.

LOG CABIN COMPLEX

This complex has twelve cabins.  Eleven cabins are equipped with five bunkbeds, bath and shower.  There is adequate closet and storage space in each cabin.  Bring your own towels and toiletries.  Cabin #6 has laundry facilities available for your use.  (4 minimum)

RV CABINS

These cabins contain a bunk bed, a double bed, and electricity.  The restroom, shower and laundry facilities are located nearby in the bathhouse.  Bring your own bedding, towels, and toiletries.  There are no cooking facilities in these cabins.  Both cabins sleep four.

RV CAMPGROUND

The Whittington Center hosts 125 RV campsites in two adjacent areas.  All campsites are equipped with water, electricity, and sewage hookups.  A bathhouse, complete with laundry facilities, compliments the campground.  All campsites are designed as “pull through” and will accommodate the longest travel trailers.  No campfires are allowed; however, charcoal or gas grills are acceptable. 

RV camping is also available in the 20 spaces at the Coors Range, and 32 spaces at the shotgun facility, each site is provided with electricity only.

PRIMITIVE CAMPGROUND

The primitive camping area contains 35 tent spaces and is limited to tents and small pop up tent trailers only.  There is a central water point and chemical toilets provided.  Small campfires are permitted in approved fire pits.
