The School of 1000 Yards focuses on the caliber/cartridges and rifle platforms that are designed for engagements between 100 – 1000 yards, with the School of Extreme Long Range emphasizing the cartridge/calibers that are designed for 2000 yard engagements. The Whittington U Precision Academy courses take place in the beautiful NRA Whittington Center's Backcountry Training Area that is equipped with a 2000 meter Known Distance and Unknown Distance Range to maximize each course to its fullest potential.

Both the School of 1000 Yards and School of ELR offer various Masters Courses that are designed to challenge each graduate by putting them in an environment that forces them to employ the skills taught in previous courses. What is it?

The School of 1000 Yards focuses on the cartridges/calibers and rifle platforms that are designed for 1000 yard use. The unique aspect of the School of 1000 Yards revolves around the environment, with a firing line that is located in the Backcountry Training Area and not a flat range. This specialized curriculum focuses on practical and real world techniques and deployment of your rifle. You will be expected to follow instructors' direction and course guidelines which include shooting off on a backpack or other unconventional rests.

The School of 1000 Yards: Precision Long Range (PLR) I introduces students to the art and science of Precision Long Range Shooting with classroom instruction, known distance gathering and unknown distance engagements. PLR II and PLR III progress each student through range estimation exercises, precision high angle engagements, and alternate firing positions with increasingly difficult target engagements, all the while focusing on preparation for the Precision Academy's Masters Courses.

The physical requirement of these courses will include walking/hiking to shooting positions, standing, kneeling, and laying prone for extended periods of time. The BTA has an elevation of up to 8000 ft. Good physical fitness will help students be more comfortable at these elevations.
