NRA Whittington Center; High Power Rifle Silhouette
The NRA Black Powder Cartridge Rifle National Championship at the NRA Whittington Center is one of the most revered silhouette rifle events in the American shooting sports calendar. Hosted at the world-class ranges near Raton, NM, this multi-day national championship brings together dedicated shooters who compete with black powder cartridge rifles — authentic or reproduction single-shot firearms using cartridges and propellants from the black powder era.
Competitors challenge themselves against a series of silhouette targets — typically shaped like animals — placed at various distances, where precision, consistency, and skill determine national titles. Shooters can compete in different classifications, including iron-sight and scoped divisions, reflecting both traditional marksmanship and evolving equipment mastery. The event promotes a family-friendly atmosphere while preserving the rich heritage of classic rifle shooting that dates back decades.

Shooters can take part in competitive shooting, rifle and pistol silhouette, bullseye disciplines, and even black powder muzzle-loading rifles.
