Coal Canyon (From Raton NM, head west on NM-555 W/York Canyon Rd for 5.4 miles)
The Thunderbeast Arms Co King of Coal Canyon is an annual Precision Rifle Series (PRS) Pro Series field match hosted at the renowned NRA Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico. Taking place over two days in the scenic and rugged Coal Canyon ranges, this event challenges competitors with 20 well-designed stages that reward precision, wind reading, and consistent shooting fundamentals.
Designed by experienced match directors, the course of fire embraces mostly natural terrain with minimal artificial props, creating a true test of skill rather than luck. Shooters engage steel and other targets at distances typically ranging from 300 to 1,100+ yards, with the majority inside 800 yards, making this match a benchmark event in the PRS calendar.
Competitors from around the country participate, with lodging available onsite at the Whittington Center or nearby in Raton. Hosted by the Severance Training Center and proudly titled by Thunderbeast Arms Co, this match draws precision rifle athletes and enthusiasts alike, celebrating high-level marksmanship in iconic New Mexico terrain

Come stay with us! The general public is welcome to stay at the Whittington Center. There is a broad range of housing to accommodate individuals, couples, and small to large groups.
Shooters can take part in competitive shooting, rifle and pistol silhouette, bullseye disciplines, and even black powder muzzle-loading rifles.
