Description

Each year, elite Wyoming 4-H shooters — selected based on performance at the Wyoming State 4-H Shooting Sports competition — are invited to participate in the Wyoming 4-H Shooting Sports Event at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico. The Whittington Center is renowned for its expansive shooting terrain, multiple competitive ranges, and supportive environment for youth development in shooting sports.

Participants take part in a variety of disciplines, experience structured competition in rifle, pistol, shotgun, and archery, and spend time training with experienced range personnel. This trip emphasizes firearms safety, sportsmanship, personal growth, and community building among 4-H members from across Wyoming. The event also highlights achievement in marksmanship and teaches best practices for safe, responsible shooting.

In addition to competitive shooting, the experience exposes youth to a premier outdoor shooting facility with world-class ranges, safety resources, and a culture built on respect for the sport and the environment — enhancing their confidence and enthusiasm for shooting sports.

Basic Gun Safety Rules

Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. Common sense will tell you which direction is the safest depending on your surroundings.
Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. When holding a gun, rest your trigger finger outside the trigger guard alongside the gun. This will often be the hardest part for kids to remember.
Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use. Demonstrate to your child how to check if a gun is loaded and where the safety mechanism is located.
