Thomas "Black Jack" Ketchum (October 31, 1863-April 26, 1901) was a cowboy turned train robber and murderer. Black Jack was a member of the infamous Hole-in-the-wall gang and was a known associate of Butch Cassidy and Harvey "Kid Curry" Logan. Most of the train robberies were committed in Folsom, Des Moines, and Twin Mountain, as well as far south as Deming, and Nutt, New Mexico Territory. The murders attributed to Black Jack included several in Texas and the kidnapping and murder of Albert Fountain and his 8-year-old son in 1896 near Las Cruces, New Mexico Territory. Albert Fountain was the lawyer who defended Billy the Kid during his 1881 murder trial. On August 16, 1899, Black Jack attempted his last solo train robbery near Twin Mountain, New Mexico Territory. The conductor recognized Black Jack and wounded him before he could conduct the robbery. The next day, a sheriff's posse found him next to the tracks and took him to Trinidad, Colorado, for medical treatment. His injuries were so severe that his right arm was amputated. After being nursed back to health he was transferred to Clayton, New Mexico Territory, where he was tried for attempted train robbery. He was found guilty and was hanged on April 26, 1901. Facing his fate with bravado, he reportedly dashed up the steps of the gallows, announcing, "I'll be in Hell before you start breakfast."
